Boasting an 80-year family legacy, Woodruff & Sons embodies all the values of a truly successful contractor
Woodruff & Sons has evolved from a small, family-run excavation and grading operation into a multi-state construction powerhouse built on hard work, integrity, and enduring relationships. Established in Michigan City, Indiana, in 1946, the business was founded by WWII veteran Roy Woodruff, who invested his savings in a single bulldozer. Roy joined forces with his brother, Louis, and father, William, and Woodruff & Sons quickly grew through sheer determination, ingenuity, and pure, hard graft. In 1973, Roy expanded the business into Florida, laying the foundation for Woodruff & Sons to become the leading bi-state, multi-disciplinary contractor that it is today.

Now, in 2026, Woodruff & Sons is thrilled to celebrate its 80th anniversary – an incredible milestone underpinned by its longstanding legacy, centered around exceptional quality and innovation. Headquartered in Bradenton, Florida, with its Indiana operations still thriving under third-generation leadership, the company remains proudly family owned and operated. Today, Woodruff & Sons is led by its President Donald Woodruff, Roy’s son, alongside his siblings Bruce and Linda, and continues to deliver high-quality infrastructure solutions – from underground utilities and roadway construction to site development and material recycling – while staying true to the values on which it was established.
In commemoration of this anniversary, Construction Today sits down with Don to learn more about Woodruff & Sons’ most recent projects and developments, as well as the differentiating factors that keep the business at the forefront of the market.
“Our reputation is well known throughout Central Florida and northern Indiana for having the capabilities and expertise to complete the most complex and difficult projects – with a focus on underground utilities,” Don begins. “Our father always sought out the most challenging projects. He had a very creative mind and was extremely innovative when it came to finding ways to get things done. He was able to visualize how he wanted to construct something and, if there was a tool or piece of equipment that he needed to facilitate his vision that wasn’t available, he would fabricate it. He did receive patents for three of his inventions which are still being built by manufacturers today.”
Major projects
This focus on innovation runs deeply in Woodruff & Sons’ DNA. As market demands continue to expand and evolve, projects are becoming increasingly complex, so the company invests heavily in equipment modernization and technology to remain competitive and uphold its exacting standards. In turn, Woodruff & Sons has successfully delivered a multitude of large-scale projects for both municipalities and independent clients.
“Currently, our Florida operation is working on our Upper Manatee River Road project. This project involves a major reconstruction of an existing two-lane road that is being transformed into a four-lane divided thoroughfare that will become an evacuation route in the future,” Don details. “This project is for Manatee County and is being handled through a developer reimbursement agreement with a local developer. The project involves all private utility relocations, storm drainage, and utilities, including a 42” water transmission main. This is a three-year project valued in the $90 million range.
“Simultaneously, our Indiana branch is working on a project for Indiana-American Water and involves replacing approximately 1400 lead-pipe water services,” he continues. “This includes replacing the water service from the water main all the way into the houses. Many of these are installed by directional drill up to or near the house to avoid obstacles and improvements in the homeowner’s yards. This is a two-year project valued at about $10 million.”

The Woodruff Way
Central to Woodruff & Sons’ long-term success is its unwavering commitment to people development. The company recognizes that delivering consistent quality and upholding its standards across every project begins with comprehensive training, strong leadership, and a culture where knowledge is actively shared and refined in the field.
“Most of our training is done in-house. We have found that this gives us the most consistent results, and we call it the ‘Woodruff Way’,” Don says. “We are very proud of our annual Safety Day. While we have regular safety training throughout the year, we also shut down all our projects for one day each year to bring all the employees into one location for a full day of training. We do use some outside specialty instructors on this day, but also have many sessions taught by our supervisors. On this day, we have multiple stations set up and the employees are split into groups that rotate through each station during the day. At many of these stations they get hands-on training that enables them to work safer and more productively. Using our supervisors as instructors facilitates the dissemination of tried and true methods that you won’t find in any courses or textbooks.”
As Woodruff & Sons celebrates its 80th anniversary, its longevity can be attributed not only to innovation, capability, and technical expertise, but to something far more fundamental: trust. Following Roy’s example, the company continues to build lasting relationships by keeping its word and doing exactly what it says it will do. Clients know that when Woodruff & Sons commits to a project, it will deliver – and when challenges arise, they can rely on honest guidance and practical solutions. The same principle extends to its long-standing network of subcontractors, many of whom have partnered with the company for years, confident in the consistency and integrity that define every interaction.
“Linda, Bruce and I are all near or at retirement age and we are in the process of handing the reins to the next generation. Linda’s son, Chad Wakeman, will be leading the company into the future. Assisting Chad will be Matt Anderson, Chad’s brother-in-law and Linda’s son-in-law, and Paul Bakker – a very valued employee with more than 30 years’ tenure. Besides Matt and Paul, also supporting Chad are many superintendents, project managers and estimators that have decades of experience,” Don concludes, optimistic for the company’s future.
“In three-to-five years, I hope to be sitting back and watching the next generation thrive with the business,” he affirms as our conversation draws to a close. “Linda, Bruce and I will remain on the board of directors and be available to offer advice and direction when needed.”
